Blood count problems

Pancytopenia

Low red cells, white cells and platelets together is a test finding, not a final diagnosis. We review the reports and explain which next tests are likely to be useful.

What the consultation involves

  • We separate what the counts show from what they cannot yet tell you.
  • Your history, medicines, nutrition and any recent infections are reviewed alongside the reports.
  • If a bone marrow examination is likely to be needed, we explain what it involves and why.

Who may need this

  • A report showing more than one cell line below the normal range
  • Tiredness, repeated infections or bleeding occurring together
  • A referral asking for specialist review of unexplained low counts

What to bring

  • Every complete blood count you have, in date order
  • Any previous bone marrow, biopsy or pathology reports
  • Current medicines and details of any recent treatment

Where care happens
