Blood count problems
Anemia
Anemia means the haemoglobin is lower than expected. It is a finding with many possible causes, and the useful question is which one applies to you.
What the consultation involves
- Your haemoglobin is read as a trend, alongside red-cell size and iron studies where they exist.
- We go through diet, blood loss, periods, pregnancy, gut symptoms, kidney health and any long-term illness.
- Where the cause is already clear, we say so and treat it - rather than ordering tests that will not change the plan.
Who may need this
- A blood report showing low haemoglobin
- Tiredness, breathlessness on exertion, or persistent pallor
- Anemia that has come back after treatment, or has not responded to iron
What to bring
- All blood counts showing haemoglobin, oldest first
- Any iron studies, vitamin B12 or folate results
- A list of current medicines, including iron supplements and their doses
