Blood count problems
Low platelets
Low platelet counts can have many causes. We review count trends, symptoms, medicines and recent illness before deciding what - if anything - needs treating.
What the consultation involves
- Your platelet counts are read as a trend across every report you have, not as a single number.
- We go through bruising, bleeding, recent infections, pregnancy and any new medicines or supplements.
- Where the picture is still unclear, we explain which further tests would actually change the plan.
Who may need this
- A blood report showing a platelet count below the normal range
- Easy bruising, prolonged bleeding from small cuts, or frequent nosebleeds
- A low count found incidentally during a pre-operative or routine check
What to bring
- All blood reports that show a platelet count, oldest first
- A list of current medicines, including painkillers and supplements
- Details of any recent illness, infection or hospital admission
