Long-term blood conditions

Thalassemia

We review transfusion history, iron monitoring, medicines, complications and the long-term follow-up plan.

What the consultation involves

  • Transfusion intervals and pre-transfusion haemoglobin are reviewed as a trend.
  • Iron loading is discussed alongside chelation, adherence and side effects.
  • Long-term monitoring - heart, liver, endocrine and bone - is planned explicitly.

Who may need this

  • An existing thalassemia diagnosis needing ongoing specialist follow-up
  • A carrier state found during screening or family testing
  • Concerns about iron overload or chelation treatment

What to bring

  • Haemoglobin electrophoresis or HPLC reports
  • The transfusion record and serum ferritin trend
  • Current chelation medicines and doses
