Bleeding and bruising

Bleeding disorders

We assess bleeding history, medicines, family history and the available clotting or platelet tests to work out whether a bleeding disorder is likely.

What the consultation involves

  • A structured bleeding history: when it happens, how long it lasts and what stops it.
  • Review of family history, since several bleeding disorders are inherited.
  • Explanation of which clotting or platelet tests are relevant, and what each one can rule in or out.

Who may need this

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding after dental work, surgery or childbirth
  • Frequent nosebleeds or bruising without a clear cause
  • A relative with a diagnosed bleeding disorder

What to bring

  • Any clotting studies, platelet function or factor assay reports
  • A written note of past bleeding episodes and how they were managed
  • Family history details where these are known
